Arrábida Day Trip from Lisbon

Between 4 June and 15 September 2026, every day from 07:00 to 20:00, the beach roads of the eastern Arrábida are controlled. On the eastern side — Albarquel and Figueirinha — driving is prohibited on the stretch between the Travessa da Casa da Saúde and Praia da Figueirinha, with checkpoints at Albarquel and the Gávea crossroads. On the western side — Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro, Galapos and Galapinhos — access is 'conditional on the existence of parking' between the Pinheiro junction and Galapos beach, and the section closes whenever the maximum number of vehicles is reached or the authorities order it for safety.

The council's alternative is buses on the navegante system, and it lists four.

What it means in practice

On a summer weekday you can still drive to Portinho early and find the barrier open; on a summer weekend you should assume it is closed by mid-morning and park at Várzea for the free shuttle. Outside the programme dates the roads are open, the beaches are cold and the ridge is at its best for walking. A hire car makes sense in October; in July it is the one way of arriving that can be refused.

There are two ends to start from. Setúbal, at the eastern end, is reached by Fertagus, the private operator whose trains cross the 25 de Abril bridge from Roma-Areeiro, Entrecampos, Sete Rios and Campolide; the 2026 tariff PDF prints Lisboa–Setúbal at €5.70 and Lisboa–Pragal at €1.90, and the journey is about 50 minutes according to sources we could not verify on fertagus.pt, which publishes no journey time on the page we read. From Setúbal station the beach buses leave from the town; the Mercado do Livramento, one of the best fish markets in Portugal, is ten minutes' walk away and the right first stop.

Sesimbra, at the western end, has no railway. Carris Metropolitana's express 3721 runs from Sete Rios bus terminal (on the blue metro line) to the Sesimbra terminal, and unofficial timetable pages give about 1 h 10 and a single of €4.65; the official line page did not render a fare for us, so treat that figure as reported. The 3536 from Cacilhas (ferry from Cais do Sodré, €1.60 zapping) is the slower, cheaper way at a reported €2.60.

What public transport does not do is connect the two ends along the ridge road with any frequency, or reach the Ribeiro do Cavalo cove at all — which is what the kayak day is for.

Sesimbra is a fishing town under a Moorish castle, with a long town beach, a fort on the sand and a row of grilled-fish restaurants along Avenida dos Náufragos; the castle is a 30-minute uphill walk or a short taxi and is free to enter. Setúbal is a working port city whose Mercado do Livramento and the fried cuttlefish (choco frito) of its riverside restaurants are the reasons to stop; from the ferry terminal at the end of town the boats to Tróia cross the Sado estuary, where a resident dolphin pod lives. Azeitão, on the inland side of the ridge, is the cellar town: the muscatel of Setúbal and the tiles of the old quintas are what the wine day from Lisbon stops for, and what a public-transport day struggles to add.

Is Arrábida worth visiting?

For the water, yes, and not for anything else: it is the closest thing to a Mediterranean cove within an hour of Lisbon, and the ridge road above Portinho is the best view south of the Tagus. It is not worth it as a car day in July, and it is not worth it as a beach day when the Atlantic swell is up and the Cascais line beaches are calmer. Read the council page for the day you are going, take the train and the shuttle, and it is the best swim of the trip.

Book the kayak from Sesimbra with the Lisbon transport option and you have the best swim on this coast, in the one cove the car ban cannot touch, for €40. If you want the ridge and a glass of muscatel instead of a paddle, the €72 day with wine. Do it yourself only by train and shuttle, and only after reading the council's page for the date; the Arrábida is the day trip where the hire car is the mistake.
