Jerónimos Monastery Tickets

The lead-in names the source; the table is what you pay. The family fare is a per-person half price for a group that includes a minor, not a fixed family ticket. The free Sunday that older guides promise ended for visitors on 1 August 2024: since then free days are for residents in Portugal only, 52 a year of their choosing.

Under-12s are free everywhere in the MMP network, and the youth band runs on age, not on a student card.

The price is identical, €18, so the difference is practical. The official shop, mmp.bymeoblueticket.pt, sells the cloister and the Belém Tower slot in one basket, which matters because the tower has no platform equivalent. It prints no refund policy for the cloister product. The GetYourGuide entrance ticket is the same entry with the platform's calendar and account; its listing stated no cancellation terms when we read it, so it is not the flexible option either. It is rated 4.2 from 15,689 reviews, the lowest rating on this page, and reading the reviews the complaints are about the line at the door on busy days, not the ticket.

Our pick: if you are also doing the tower, buy both on the official shop; if you are choosing between a plain ticket and a guided walk, use the platform, where the cards sit side by side. If you hold the Lisboa Card, neither — reserve through the card.

The monastery sells no timed slot for its own cloister ticket — the official page prints hours and a last entry, nothing about reservations — so the line at the ticket control on a summer weekday is real and runs along the west façade from mid-morning. Two things shorten it. An online ticket, official or platform, lets you bypass the ticket window and go to the control; that is most of the wait on a busy day.

The walking tour with the monastery ticket states a skip-the-line entry with the guide, which is the same thing with a group escort. Neither removes the security check or the crowd inside the cloister; for that, the only instrument is the clock. 09:30 at opening, or after 15:30, and the ticket window itself is empty.

The monastery's page lists no audio guide and the official shop offers none with the cloister ticket when we read it. The GetYourGuide entrance ticket is plain entry, no audio. If you want commentary, the two walks above are the way, and the Belém and Jerónimos tour is the one whose route goes into the church for the tombs.

The National Coach Museum across the tram line does sell an entry-with-audio ticket, which is a different building.

The Lisboa Card, €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 and €62 for 72 at the prices valid until 31 March 2027, includes the cloister. The rule, from Turismo de Lisboa's own pages: collect the physical card, then reserve a date and time for the monastery through the card's booking link, then present the digital ticket and validate the card at the access control on the day. Turning up with the card and no reservation gets you the ticket line, not the door.

On a Belém day the arithmetic favours the card: cloister €18 plus tower €15 is €33 against €31 for the 24-hour card, which also pays for tram 15E and the train, and makes the Monument to the Discoveries free. The card does not include Pena Palace; the Lisboa Card page lists the exclusions.

The church of Santa Maria de Belém, with Castilho's vault and the tombs of Vasco da Gama, Camões, Manuel I and João III, is free. Its door is at the west end of the square-facing façade, near the cloister control but separate from it; the great south portal facing the river is not an entrance. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10:30–17:00 and Sundays and religious holidays 14:00–17:00 — later than the cloister in the morning, and closed to visitors during services.

On a Sunday morning the church is shut for mass while the cloister is open, so do the cloister first that day. Nobody sells a 'church ticket'; a seller who does is charging for a free door. The Jerónimos Monastery page describes what is inside.

Read on museusemonumentos.pt on 29 August 2026; the table sets the cloister's and the church's hours against each other so the cut-offs are visible. Cloister Tuesday to Sunday 09:30–17:30, last entry 17:00, ticket office closes 16:30. Church Tuesday to Saturday 10:30–17:00, Sundays 14:00–17:00.

Everything above is avoidable with one online ticket bought the day before and the Jerónimos Monastery page read once. The monastery is the most visited monument in Portugal; the ticket is not the hard part.

• Queuing at the ticket window with a ticket already on your phone. Online tickets go to the control, not the window.
• Arriving after 16:30 without a ticket. The office is shut; the cloister is open until 17:30.
• Doing the church first on a Sunday morning. It opens at 14:00 that day; the cloister has been open since 09:30.
• Paying a reseller for a 'church ticket' or a 'Belém combo'. The church is free and the combo is two official prices plus a fee.
• Holding a Lisboa Card and no reservation. Reserve through the card's link the day before.
